Three Things Happening at Once

Luna Blu is cobalt on the outside, near-black at the core, and finished at the crest with a small mirrored sphere. Thirty-eight centimetres of Italian art glass in which the colour is never uniform — it thins to bright blue at the edges and thickens to almost no light at all through the centre. The mirrored ball sits where the eye lands first and is the only part of the piece that reflects rather than absorbs.

The Curve at the Top

The form rises, opens, and then hooks back over itself in a single tapered spire. That reversal is the hard part of the make — glass wants to fall, not curl, and holding a thin tail at that angle means working it in the last seconds before the piece sets. It is also what stops the silhouette reading as a vessel from any angle.

A Serious Blue

In Italian, blu is the blue with weight in it — a Giotto sky, a Bellini robe, the February sea off Venice.
